House Call Doggie Drama
The days and evenings pass by about the same every day. The kennel is open from 8-10, 11-12, 3-6, and 8-8:30 daily. We try to spend as much time as we can with Dasha, though she practically ignores us when we are are there.
One afternoon, Dasha was with most of the dogs on the poop deck. It was sunny for a change, so a lot of the parents there decided to sit out on deck chairs. Owners come and go as they please during kennel times. The dogs range in size and age. There was one small, older sheltie who was somehow trampled by a huge, heavy young airdale, when a couple of owner presented themselves on deck. The pack was moving and jumping toward the gate when the sheltie was stepped on. He let out a yelp and howled as he limped on one leg. The owner who was present scooped him up and whisked him back to the kennels.
In fact, the dog had a couple surgeries recently and was on a special diet. He looked pretty frail to begin with. The doctor on board was summoned, but he said he could not practice medicine on a dog. There was a PA announcement asking if anyone had veterinary experience. Thankfully there was a passenger who was a Vet on board. Needless to say everyone who had not been at the kennel at the time, came rushing up to see if it was there dog who needed assistance. It turns out that after an x-ray in the medical center, the dog suffered a dislocated hip. The owners brought him back to their stateroom where he remained until they reached New York where their vet was waiting
